Intermediate First Aid (formerly OFA L2)

Intermediate First Aid (formally OFA L2)

Intermediate first aid is a 14-hour program (excluding breaks) designed to provide lifesaving first aid skills to workers in industry. This course covers all the material from the Basic First Aid course, and expands on additional first aid topics. Participants will also be given additional skills practice and scenarios to help build confidence as a certified first aid attendant in the workplace.

Prerequisites

No previous first aid training is required. Candidates must be able to understand and perform the first aid skills required to show competency in essential life saving skills. Although all individuals may take this course, candidates must be over 16 years of age in order to practice their skills in BC workplaces.

Certification

To qualify for intermediate first aid certification, the candidate must participate in a minimum of 14 hours of training and successfully complete the course objectives as taught and evaluated by an instructor authorized by the Workersโ€™ Compensation Board (WorkSafeBC). Certification is valid for three years from the date of completion of the intermediate training course. First aid attendants who’s ticket is expired are no longer permitted to perform the duties of a first aid attendant in BC workplaces; please re-certify before your ticket expires.

Recertification

Under regulation, to renew an intermediate certificate, a candidate must successfully retake the first aid course. This will aid in refreshing your skills, learn about any changes to standards and best practices, and help to build confidence in your abilities again. Students who are re-certifying with Be Prepared First Aid Vancouver Island will also receive a discount on this course as a returning student. A recertification student must attend this course before the date of expiration of their previous certification.

Intention

Instructors and course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting:
โ€ขWorkplace compliance with the first aid regulation
โ€ขEffective interaction between employers, supervisors, workers, and attendants
โ€ขEfficient co-operation with higher levels of medical care, such as the advanced first aid attendant, BC Ambulance Service, and hospital emergency personnel

Written

Students who participate in the WorkSafeBC intermediate first aid program will be required to complete a written exam at the end of day 2. This consists of a 66 question multiple choice exam. Students will be required to obtain a score of 70% (47/66).

Candidates may attempt a second examination no sooner than 24 hours after the first attempt. Candidates who choose not to attempt a second examination within 60 days of the first examination will be required to repeat the entire course of instruction prior to being eligible for another examination. Should the second examination also result in failure, the candidate must undergo a full course of instruction to be eligible for another examination.
