What is Basic First Aid?

WorkSafe BC Basic First Aid (formerly known as OFA L1) is a 7 hour program (8 hour day with normal breaks) designed to provide life saving first aid skills to workers in industry.
This course is open to all individuals, however candidates must be at least 16 years of age in BC to practice these skills independently in workplaces. No previous first aid training is required. Candidates will be required to present a government issued photo ID to receive their ticket.
Certification is valid for three years from the date of completion of the Basic First Aid training course.

Prerequisites
No previous first aid training is required. Candidates must be able to understand and perform the first aid skills required to show competency in essential life saving skills. Although all individuals may take this course, candidates must be over 16 years of age in order to practice their skills in BC workplaces.
Intention
Instructors and course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting:
- Efficient co-operation with higher levels of medical care, such as the advanced first aid attendant, BC Ambulance Service, and hospital emergency personnel
- Workplace compliance with the first aid regulation
- Effective interaction between employers, supervisors, workers, and attendants

Certification
Upon successful completion of this interactive course and successfully writing a written 25 question multiple choice exam, candidates will receive a WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid certificate. The certificate is valid for 3 years.
Recertification
Under regulation, to renew a WorkSafeBC basic certificate a candidate must retake the basic course. However, if you return to Be Prepared First Aid Vancouver Island for a recertification, your course will be at a lower price. A recertification must occur before your certificate expires, so mark this date in your calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Basic First Aid the same as OFA 1?
WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid replaces what many people previously knew as Occupational First Aid Level 1, or OFA 1.
Who needs WorkSafeBC Intermediate First Aid?
Workers may need Basic First Aid depending on the workplace hazard rating, location, number of workers, and employer first aid requirements.
Where is the course offered?
Be Prepared First Aid Vancouver Island offers training at our Victoria location and may provide group training options across Vancouver Island.

Whats the difference between Basic and Intermediate First Aid?
Basic First Aid is a 1-day course geared towards essential life saving skills and knowledge of what you may encounter as an attendant. While Intermediate First Aid is a 2-day course that covers all the basic skills and adds on additional skills/abilities that may benefit workers who can return-to-work with the care you learn to provide.
Do you offer this course as a blended (online) program?
As this is the official WorkSafeBC program, we are unable to provide this course as a blended option.
