BASIC LIFE SUPPORT + (BLS)

Red Cross Basic Life Support + (formerly CPR-HCP)

Includes 2025 First Aid & CPR Guidelines

Purpose

Designed to build participant confidence in providing high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and performing the important steps of a rapid patient assessment in a pre-hospital and hospital setting. Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy modules can be added as additional certifications to this course.


Prerequisites

This course is open to all individuals. No previous experience or certification is required.


Audience

In-facility care providers, including nursing staff, care aides, medical and dental professionals. Pre-hospital care providers, which may include professionals in a fire service, rescue team, sports-medicine, lifeguards and ski patrol.

      • Six Rights of Medication
      • High-Performance CPR
      • Post-Cardiac Arrest Care
      • High-Performance Team Communication
      • Post-Event Debrief

Timeline

  • Full BLS course – 4 hours minimum*
  • BLS recertification – 2 hours minimum*
  • Airway Management – +1 hour (recommended add-on)
  • Oxygen Therapy – +1 hour (recommended add-on)

*Although we make every effort to stay on-schedule for all courses. This program may go longer depending on factors such as student count, skills success, student questions, etc.


Recertification

As this certification is valid for 1 year, students are welcome to re-certify with us again. Candidates wishing to take a recertification option will be required to register and complete the course before their date of expiration, otherwise they will be required to take the full program again. Returning students to Be Prepared First Aid Vancouver Island will also receive their recertification at a reduced price compared to the full program.

Completion Criteria

Students will be required to fully participate in the entire program. Candidates must demonstrate all required skills and successfully complete a multiple choice exam (75% to pass) in order to be granted a certification. Certification is valid for 1 year.


Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy Add-On

Two optional, but highly recommended add-on modules are airway management and oxygen therapy. Both of these modules are an additional hour. We are unable to add these to other Red Cross programs.
