General Information

Basic First Aid (formerly Emergency First Aid and CPR) training is a comprehensive one-day course designed to provide you with the vital skills needed to respond effectively during emergencies at home or in the workplace.
This training fulfills the first aid requirements established by the applicable Federal or Provincial workplace safety authority. The course content also aligns with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z1210 for Basic First Aid training and incorporates the most current first aid and CPR guidelines. Register today to build the knowledge and confidence needed to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
Prerequisites
All individuals of all abilities are welcome to attend. No previous experience or certification is required.

Completion Criteria
Candidates will be required to demonstrate all required skills and complete a multiple choice exam in order to be granted a certification.
Certification
Upon successful completion of this fun and interactive course students will complete a written multiple choice exam. Candidates will then receive a Red Cross Basic First Aid certificate. The certificate is valid for 3 years.
Recertification
Be Prepared First Aid Vancouver Island runs a recertification course frequently. This program is a 4-5 hour course which focuses on practice and skills, with information on recent standards changes and more.
If you return to Be Prepared First Aid Vancouver Island for your recertification, we will offer you a discount. Students will be required to register and complete the course prior to their certificate expiration in order to qualify. Please note your expiration date and return before this.
Students will be asked to present their previous certification on the day of class. Should a student have an expired certification, or be unable to present the previous certificate, they will be asked to pay for a full program in order to proceed.

What should I bring to class?
Bring government-issued photo ID, comfortable clothing for hands-on practice, lunch or snacks, and any course materials or instructions provided before class
Is there a practical skills assessment?
Yes. Participants must successfully demonstrate required first aid, CPR, and AED skills to complete the course. This occurs while skills are being practiced throughout the course. Don’t worry, we will support you through these and help you build your confidence.

What is with the new course name from Emergency First Aid to Basic First Aid?
In 2024 the CSA (Canadian Standards Authority), which governs workplace first aid training, made several updates and changes to their guidelines. One recommendation was the align all workplace approved courses to the same naming system across all provinces and territories in Canada. Red Cross has now adopted these recommendations.
What will change with the course naming from Emergency First Aid to Basic First Aid?
The course content will not change, you will still get the same comprehensive programing as before. Simply the naming system. Over the next several months all documentation, books, tools, certificates and other items will change over to the new name.

We understand that changes to course names can be confusing for individuals and businesses. We guarantee that only the name of the course has changed, but the essential content will not. If your employer requires the former certificate name, we ask them to call us and we can discuss options.
