Audience

Open to all individuals of all abilities. Course is designed to provide basic lay-rescuer training for community and home emergencies. If participants wish to use these skills in the workplace, participants are required to register for a WorkSafeBC approved course, or its equivalent.

Course Content

  • The Red Cross
  • Responding to Emergencies
  • Check, Call, Care
  • Airway Emergencies – Choking (adult)
    • Includes:
      • Responsive Partial Airway Choking (adult)
      • Responsive Full Airway Choking (adult)
      • Unresponsive Choking (adult)
  • Circulation Emergencies
    • Includes:
      • Heart Attack
      • Stroke
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – CPR (adult)
    • Includes:
      • Compression-Only CPR
      • Traditional CPR with Barrier Device
      • Two-Person CPR
  • Using an Automated External Defibrillator (adult)
    • Includes:
      • Deployment
      • Precautions
      • Workplace/Public Use

Timeline

Average course length is 4 hours, but may go longer in order to confirm knowledge and skills.

Completion Criteria

Candidates will be required to demonstrate all required skills and complete a multiple choice exam in order to be granted a certification.
